Comienza reunión de la Reserva Federal sobre política monetaria
Washington.- El Comité de Mercado Abierto de la Reserva Federal, que dirige la política monetaria de Estados Unidos, inició hoy su última reunión programada del año, de la que algunos economistas esperan que surja una revisión de la promesa de mantener las tasas de interés bajas hasta mediados de 2013.
El Comité emitirá su comunicado a la hora 19:15 GMT y son numerosos los expertos que creen que el texto indicará un abandono, o al menos una consideración, de la opción de una tercera ronda de adquisición de bonos del Tesoro.
Entre 2008 y 2011 la Reserva desarrolló dos campañas de adquisición de bonos del Tesoro por un total de 2,3 billones de dólares para sustentar el sistema financiero inyectando dinero y garantizando que las tasas de interés a largo plazo se mantendrán bajas.
Desde diciembre de 2008 la Reserva ha mantenido en menos del 0,25 % la tasa de interés de referencia y en agosto pasado el Comité de Mercado Abierto reafirmó ese compromiso señalando que mantendría esa política monetaria hasta mediados de 2013.
Pero en meses recientes, según los expertos del gobierno, la economía ha mostrado algunos indicios de fortalecimiento y la tasa oficial de desempleo bajó del 9,1% en octubre al 8,6 % en noviembre, aunque buena parte de esa disminución se debió a que unas 315.000 personas sencillamente abandonaron la búsqueda de trabajo.
En su reunión de septiembre la Reserva anunció que entre diciembre y junio iba a canjear bonos de corto plazo valorados en 400.000 millones de dólares por bonos de plazo más largo a fin de extender el período de maduración de los títulos en su hoja de balance. EFE
