La Policía de Nueva York prueba detectores portátiles de armas
Nueva York.- La Policía de Nueva York está poniendo a prueba un nuevo dispositivo portátil que ayudará a los agentes a detectar en la calle si una persona porta un arma a través de rayos infrarrojos, informó hoy su máximo responsable, Raymond Kelly.
El comisionado de la Policía neoyorquina detalló que los nuevos detectores de armas portátiles van instalados en los furgones que patrullan las calles de la ciudad y ayudan a evitar que los agentes tengan que cachear a los posibles criminales.
«Todavía hay demasiadas armas en nuestras calles, demasiados asesinos sueltos y demasiados disparos», afirmó Kelly durante un desayuno de trabajo organizado por la Fundación de la Policía de Nueva York.
De momento, los nuevos dispositivos, que han sido desarrollados en los últimos tres años con el apoyo del Departamento de Defensa, sólo son eficaces a una distancia de poco más de un metro, pero Kelly confió hoy en que en un futuro funcionen en un radio de 25 metros.
Gracias al nuevo detector, los agentes podrán saber si una persona lleva un arma así como el lugar exacto del cuerpo donde la esconde, según reveló el comisionado, quien dijo que empezarán a utilizarse tan pronto como cumplan todos los requerimientos.
«Seguimos recurriendo al derecho establecido hace tiempo de la Policía de parar e interrogar a individuos sobre quienes tenemos una sospecha razonable. Pero la realidad es que tenemos que hacer más todavía», añadió Kelly.
Poco después de conocerse los primeros detalles sobre los nuevos dispositivos, la Unión de Libertades Civiles de Nueva York (NYCLU, por sus siglas en inglés) emitió un comunicado en el que expresó su «intriga» y «preocupación» por la propuesta.
«Si la Policía continúa adelante con sus planes, el público necesita más información sobre esta tecnología, saber cómo funciona y los daños que pueden causar», afirmó la directora ejecutiva de la asociación civil, Donna Lieberman.
La NYCLU dijo estar «ansiosa» por encontrar soluciones que ayuden a resolver el problema de la violencia en las calles de la ciudad, y dijo que si la tecnología funciona como dice la Policía, ayudaría a reducir los índices de cacheos en Nueva York.
Pero la directora ejecutiva de la asociación advirtió también que caminar por las calles sin tener que pasar por un «cacheo virtual» de la Policía también tiene que ver con el derecho a la privacidad de las personas.
Nueva York contabilizó en 2011 poco más de 500 asesinatos en sus calles, un 5% menos que en 2010, su tercer índice de criminalidad más bajo desde 1963, según datos facilitados en diciembre pasado por el alcalde de la Gran Manzana, Michael Bloomberg. EFE
