American Airlines pidió protección bajo la ley de quiebra, pero seguirá volando
FORT WORTH, Texas – Las compañías matrices de American Airlines y su subsidiaria American Eagle pidieron el martes el amparo bajo la ley de bancarrota, reportó la Associated Press.
AMR Corp. y AMR Eagle Holding Corp. informaron que pidieron la quiebra para reorganizarse y aseguraron que conviene a los intereses de las compañías y sus accionistas.
Según una información servida en Univisión.com, la tercera aerolínea del país agregó que su director general Gerard Arpey dimitirá y será reemplazado por Thomas Horton, presidente de la empresa.
Anuncian reorganización
American dijo que solicitó la protección de amparo ante los acreedores para reducir sus costos y su deuda a fin de permanecer competitiva.
La aerolínea dijo que continuará con normalidad sus vuelos durante la reorganización.
American fue la única aerolínea estadounidense importante que no se declaró en bancarrota tras los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001. La última que lo hizo fue Delta en el 2005.
Costos laborales
American indicó que sus costos laborales le obligan a gastar por lo menos $600 millones más que otras aerolíneas.
Además de mayores costos laborales, American ha encarado el encarecimiento de los combustibles.
El combustible de avión cuesta unos $3 por galón (3.79 litros) en lo que va de año -precio récord según las estadísticas gubernamentales recopiladas desde 1990.
El combustible de avión es más caro porque tiene mayor octanaje. En el 2008 el precio medio era de $2.96 por galón, cuando el crudo superó los $147 el barril por primera vez.
En los últimos cinco años se ha encarecido un 56.4%. En el 2006 el precio medio era de $1.92 por galón.
American perdió $162 millones en el tercer trimestre y ha perdido dinero en 14 de los últimos 16 trimestres.
Seguirán funcionando
La Agencia Francesade Noticias (AFP) dijo que la aerolínea mantendrá sus operaciones normalmente, gracias a una disponibilidad de efectivo de $4,100 millones.
En un comunicado, la aerolínea -cuyo presidente ejecutivo renunciante Gerard Arpey será reemplazado por Thomas Horton- explicó que la reorganización que emprenderá, en el marco del Capítulo 11 de la ley de quiebras estadounidense, le permitirá reducir consistentemente sus costos de funcionamiento, principalmente en materia salarial.
El mercado llevaba mucho tiempo estimando que el grupo podía verse obligado a tal extremo por no haber podido obtener de sus pilotos las concesiones salariales suficientes para sanear sus cuentas.
Qué dicen los pilotos
Los pilotos de American Airlines sostienen haber puesto suficiente de su parte, haciendo importantes sacrificios financieros durante la crisis anterior, en 2003, cuando el grupo era el líder mundial del sector.
«Tenemos que hacer frente a nuestra estructura de costos, incluyendo los costos de nuestros salarios», explicó Thomas Horton, previamente director financiero de American Airlines y quien tendrá a cargo la responsabilidad de impulsar la recuperación tras la salida de su antecesor, Gerard Arpey, un «histórico» del grupo al que se había incorporado hace tres décadas.
American Airlines ha asegurado que continuará su funcionamiento normal y que sus clientes seguirán recibiendo los servicios a los que están acostumbrados. El grupo, que ha invertido mucho dinero para renovar su flota, sin embargo, no dijo nada del destino de la enorme orden de compra de 460 aeronaves (260 Airbus A320 y 200 Boeing 737) anunciada en julio, reportó la AFP.
