Turco Hasan Tuluy, nuevo vicepresidente del Banco Mundial para Latinoamérica
Washington.- El turco Hasan Tuluy fue elegido hoy nuevo vicepresidente del Banco Mundial (BM) para Latinoamérica y el Caribe, con lo que se convertirá en el responsable de supervisar la cartera de préstamos de esta región, informó hoy la institución.
Tuluy se incorporará oficialmente a su nuevo puesto a partir del primero de enero en sustitución de Pamela Cox, que trabajó como vicepresidenta durante siete años para Latinoamérica y que ahora se encargará de Asia Oriental y Pacífico.
El turco, que hasta ahora ha sido responsable de Recursos Humanos y tiene experiencia en Oriente Medio y África, supervisará los préstamos y operaciones de lucha contra la pobreza para los países de Latinoamérica y la región del Caribe, que en 2011 llegaron a los 9,600 millones de dólares.
El BM destacó en un comunicado el trabajo de Tuluy en países de «ingreso medio», que permitirá consolidar el rol del banco en su lucha por el crecimiento y la inclusión social.
Tuluy por su parte se mostró ilusionado por esta nueva oportunidad profesional en una región que «ha demostrado los resultados exitosos pueden ser moldeados por políticas acertadas y con liderazgo».
«Desde 2003, la región ha estado recogiendo los beneficios de uno de sus periodos de crecimiento más sólido, en el que se ha sacado a 73 millones de personas de la pobreza moderada y ha recortado el índice de pobreza extrema a la mitad», subrayó Tuluy.
El turco recordó que aún no está claro el impacto que tendrá la crisis de la eurozona en Latinoamérica e indicó que se deben proteger los logros sociales obtenidos con la ayuda de las instituciones de la región.
Tuluy será el responsable de unos 700 trabajadores del BM en Latinoamérica y supervisará préstamos, ayudas y créditos en marcha por valor de 17,000 millones de dólares en una región con 540 millones de habitantes.
Los países latinoamericanos y de la región Caribe son receptores de más del 30 por ciento de todos los préstamos del Banco Internacional de Reconstrucción y Desarrollo (IBRD, en su sigla en inglés). EFE
