El Departamento Agricultura de EE.UU. cierra 259 oficinas para ahorrar US$150 millones
Washington .- El Departamento de Agricultura de EE.UU. cerrará 259 oficinas, laboratorios y otras instalaciones, lo que permitirá ahorrar 150 millones de dólares anuales, anunció hoy su secretario, Tom Vilsack.
Esta decisión forma parte del esfuerzo de la Administración para recortar el gasto público, dijo Vilsack en un acto durante la reunión anual de la American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), la mayor organización agropecuaria del país.
El cierre se produce además, después de que el Congreso haya reducido el presupuesto a su Departamento en más de 3,000 millones de dólares desde 2010, aproximadamente un 12 por ciento, apuntó.
Vilsack señaló el esfuerzo que ha hecho su departamento para ofrecer planes de retiro anticipado a sus trabajadores y dijo que en los últimos quince meses cerca de 7,000 empleados se han retirado.
«Sabíamos que este día de reducción de presupuesto iba a llegar y hemos sido proactivos», señaló el secretario, que explicó que esas prejubilaciones han permitido eliminar algunos puestos o reestructurar posiciones para adecuarse a las necesidades del Departamento.
Los cierres y las consolidaciones de puestos de trabajo comenzarán a finales de invierno hasta aproximadamente el mes de julio y calculan que cuando esté totalmente ejecutado el plan permitirá ahorrar 150 millones de dólares anualmente.
Los cierres y las reducciones de personal afectarán a la sede central en Washington DC, así como a las oficinas regionales de 46 estados. En total cerrarán 259 oficinas y otras instalaciones en todo el país, además de siete en el extranjero.
«En algunos casos, las oficinas ya no tenían personal o tenían muy poco, una o dos personas; algunas están a menos de 30 kilómetros una de otra», explicó Vilsack, en otros casos, las mejoras tecnológicas han permitido estos recortes. EFE
