Más de 68,000 armas recuperadas en México desde 2007 eran de EE.UU., dice ATF
Washington.- El Gobierno de México recuperó más de 99,000 armas de fuego entre 2007 y 2011, de las cuales más de 68,000 fueron rastreadas a Estados Unidos, informaron hoy las autoridades estadounidenses.
En un informe de ocho páginas, la Oficina para el Control del Alcohol, Tabaco y Armas de Fuego (ATF) dijo que durante ese período, las autoridades de México les entregaron más de 99,000 armas para su revisión y que, de ese total, más de 68,000 procedían de EE.UU.
El informe sólo abarca las armas entregadas al ATF para su rastreo y que fueron recuperadas en México entre el 1 de enero de 2007 y el 31 de diciembre de 2011.
La ATF precisa que determinó que las más de 68,000 armas en cuestión fueron «fabricadas en EE.UU., o legalmente importadas» por personas con permiso legal del Gobierno federal.
Según un desglosado, el mayor número de armas rastreadas a EE.UU. se registró en 2008, cuando la ATF determinó que 16,192 armas fueron fabricadas en Estados Unidos, y otras 4,843 fueron importadas a este país.
Ese mismo año, 3,456 armas provenían de un fabricante no estadounidense, mientras que las autoridades no pudieron identificar el país de origen de otras 7.600 armas, según el informe.
En 2009, del total de armas rastreadas a petición de México, 11,057 eran de fabricación estadounidense y 3,319 fueron importadas. Ese año, 2,136 eran armas fabricadas fuera de EE.UU., y 5,043 no tenían país de origen determinado, indicó el documento.
El documento señaló además que desde 2007, los datos recopilados muestran una nueva tendencia en el tipo de armas recuperadas en México y sometidas a un estudio de rastro de la ATF, de manera que ahora hay menos pistolas y revólveres, y más rifles de asalto.
Según las autoridades policiales de México, los narcotraficantes usan con mayor frecuencia rifles de asalto, como las variantes AK y AR con cargadores desmontables, para la comisión de delitos violentos.
La ATF ha sido objeto de sendas investigaciones por parte del Congreso y del Departamento de Justicia sobre la fallida operación «Rápido y Furioso», que en 2009 permitió el trasiego ilegal de unas 2,000 armas a México.
En su reunión del pasado de abril con el presidente de EE.UU., Barack Obama, el presidente mexicano, Felipe Calderón, volvió a insistir en la necesidad de que Estados Unidos incremente el combate al flujo de armas y dinero a México que nutre la narcoviolencia en ese país.
La violencia derivada del narcotráfico se ha cobrado la vida de unas 50,000 personas desde diciembre de 2006 y ha sido un punto de fricción en la relación entre ese país y EE.UU.
Sin embargo, el informe de ATF aclaró que los datos de rastreo de armas de fuego no son producto de ninguna investigación criminal en curso o de ninguna investigación iniciada por las autoridades policiales de Estados Unidos.
Un elemento clave de las misiones policiales de la ATF es precisamente el rastreo de armas de fuego, a petición de miles de agencias locales, estatales y federales, así como del extranjero.
En total, en 2011, el Centro Nacional de Rastreo de la ATF indagó el origen de más de 319,000 armas utilizadas en crímenes, dijo la agencia federal. EFE
