Washington.- El mayor incendio forestal en la historia de Nuevo México, que ya ha arrasado con casi 92,000 hectáreas de bosques y pastizales, continúa ardiendo hoy, informaron las autoridades.
Las autoridades forestales en la región indicaron que más de 1,200 personas, entre voluntarios y bomberos profesionales, bregan con las llamas y que ayer se había contenido alrededor del 17 por ciento del incendio.
Por su parte las autoridades de salud pública aconsejaron que los niños y los adultos con enfermedades cardiacas o respiratorias se mantengan puertas adentro ya que se mantiene la posibilidad de que el incendio vuelva a crecer.
Este incendio en el Bosque Nacional Gila es resultado de dos incendios forestales que se unieron el 23 de mayo avivados por la sequía y vientos de entre 70 y 80 kilómetros por hora.
El 9 de mayo un rayo inició un incendio en un área inaccesible del Complejo Baldy, y el 16 de mayo el Servicio Forestal tuvo la primera noticia de otro foco de llamas en Whitewater, a varios kilómetros de distancia.
La secretaria del Departamento de Salud de Nuevo México, Catherine Torres, dijo que debido a la prolongada sequía es probable que la humareda persista en la región hasta la temporada de lluvias que, típicamente, comienza en julio. EFE
